Seventeen

When I got back to the apartment, Alexa was napping on the couch. Fatigue dragged at my legs as I made my way back to my bedroom. The space, decorated exactly as I wanted, almost felt like it welcomed me, and I sagged onto the bed. Brutus jumped up on it and turned in three circles before lying down in the center of my blanket.

I reached behind me and rubbed his head. "It's been a long day, hasn't it, boy? How about you park it right here, and I'll go take a long, hot bath?"

He whined a little and licked my hand, then plopped his head down between his paws and blinked his blue eyes. I was going to take that as a yes. Before I could stand, the air shimmered in front of me, and my father appeared. A detached part of my brain noticed he was wearing different clothes. At least it was good to know you could change your outfit after you were dead. It would suck to spend eternity in the horrible funeral outfit relatives chose for you.

Like Ronan, he had several rune-like tattoos on his arms that surrounded an elaborate one that reminded me of a fleur-de-lis. With everything coming at me, I wondered if it would be wise for me to consider some protective tattoos as well. I smiled at the thought because I'd always threatened my boys with a beating if they ever got one. I did have a tiny Tasmanian Devil on my butt cheek—the result of a college dare. They'd never seen that one, so they couldn't call me on my hypocrisy.

"Today didn't go so well, I assume?" he asked, floating in front of me.

Brutus whined a little bit behind me, then growled.

My father smiled. "I see you’ve gotten a pet. I always thought this place was a little quiet, but with my responsibilities, I never felt it was fair to have one."

I frowned because that sounded a little bit like a backhanded way of calling me irresponsible. It’s possible I was just being touchy, too. "Brutus will be just fine. He likes to go everywhere with me, so it's not like he's gonna be stuck here at the apartment."

Dad crossed his arms. "I wasn't judging you. It's good for you to have a dog. Now, back to your day. You look a little haggard. Is everything okay?"

I shook my head. "No, but hopefully it will be. What you told me about the Dark Fae was right." I didn’t figure it could do any harm telling him that. Apparently, the entire magical community knew.

He raised an eyebrow. “And your sister? Did she come to you?"

I paused. If there was the slightest chance he was something other than the ghost of our dad, there was no way I’d put her or the rest of us at risk. “No.”

He did the ghostly version of pacing in front of me, floating back and forth between the wall and the closet. "And your battle strategy against the Fae? There are warding spells in a box in the closet.
